Mostly by whether the place is interesting rather than whether it is expensive. A six room farmhouse with one very good cook is more useful to write about than a four hundred room resort with nine restaurants and no point of view. Size, price and star rating are not the filter. Whether there is something to say about it is.

Five things are scored: location, room, food, service and value. Value is not the same as cheap. It asks whether the price was fair for what arrived, which is why a modest place can score badly and an expensive one can score well.

Because ten point scales collapse into eights and nines within about a year, and a scale where nothing scores below seven is not a scale. Nine is deliberately awkward. It has a true middle at five, and it makes a six mean something.

No. Reviews and scores are not for sale, and no hotel gets to see a review or change a score before it is published. Commercial work does exist, it is a separate thing, and it is labelled where it appears. The commercial side is explained here.

Some booking links earn a commission when you book through them, at no extra cost to you. The commission does not change what gets written, because the links are added after the piece is finished, and plenty of pieces carry none at all.

Often enough to be worth checking, not so often that it turns into filler. New reviews and guides go up through the month, and the newsletter collects them rather than arriving on a fixed schedule.
